Diospyros virginiana - Persimmon

Diospyros virginiana, commonly known as the Persimmon! It's a fascinating fruit-bearing tree native to the eastern United States. Here's some information about the Persimmon:

1. Fruit: The Persimmon produces small to medium-sized fruit that is round or oval in shape. The fruit starts off green and gradually ripens to a vibrant orange or reddish-orange color. When fully ripe, the fruit becomes soft and has a sweet, honey-like flavor. It's important to note that some varieties of Persimmon can have an astringent taste if eaten before fully ripening.

2. Pollination: Some varieties of Persimmon, including Diospyros virginiana, are dioecious, meaning they have separate male and female trees. This means that both a male and a female tree are needed for pollination and fruit production. However, there are also self-fertile varieties available that can produce fruit without the need for cross-pollination.

MAINTENANCE NEEDS:  Low Maintenance. Needs regular watering until established.  It can be susceptible to scale and borers if in dry locations.  Fallen fruit can be messy if not harvested.
